What is a Latte Stone?
History:
Latte Stone Park is also called "Senator Angel Leon Guerrero Santos Memorial Park". It was established during the management of Governor Ford Quint Elvidge. The park holds eight latte stones. The latte stones in the park were originally from Me'pu at the Fena Valley in the southern interiors of Guam. The latte stones were moved from its original site by the military because they used its original site to build a military base. In 2005, the park was renamed "Senator Angel Leon Guerrero Santos Memorial Park" in his honor and efforts. Senator Leon Guerrero Santos was a Chamorro rights activist. The fallout shelters in the park were Japanese World War II caves. They were man-made with forced labor.
Plants:
The Latte Stone Park has Monkey Pod trees or Rain trees (a. k. a. Samanea Saman). The Monkey Pod tree is very distinctive with a huge canopy which can grow up to 200 feet. It is native to Central and South America. The Monkey Pod tree is naturalized in Hawaii. It is also found in many parts of Asia. It is called " Monkey pod" perhaps because monkeys are fond of the pods and sit in the trees eating them. |
