History:The Latte of Freedom represents strength, it was built to represent the Chamorro culture. The latte of freedom stands 80 ft. tall with walls 14 ft. thick. It serves as a “Statue of Liberty” for Guam, welcoming visitors coming to our island. It overlooks the beautiful, big, and blue Pacific Ocean. It is near the governor’s complex in Adelup. However, the structure that stands now was not the original plan.
The original plan was to have the Latte of Freedom stand at 200 ft. It was meant to stand where Two Lovers Point is standing today. At the bottom of the latte, there was supposed to be a restaurant, and also a book and gift shop. Working your way up to the capstone was supposed to be an elevator taking you up to conference rooms, stages, etc. However, this plan was very expensive. It came up to a total of $25 million in which the government did not have enough money to fulfill this plan. So, the school children of Guam donated pennies and proceeds of the Liberation Day Parade was also donated coming up to a total of $37,000. Which still was not enough. So over the next 33 years, it stayed in a bank account and collected interest coming up to a total of $2.5 million. In 2004, plans were revised and that is the structure that stands now. The Latte of Freedom was completed in May 2010. The latte was built strong and made with reinforced concrete and steel beams. It is made to withstand typhoons with winds up to 150 mph. The latte of freedom was built to stand as long as the Chamorro culture is alive on Guam. Plants: |
